Grounded in te ao Māori. Driven by people, place and purpose. Shaping architecture for generations to come.

Whaiao is an architectural practice grounded in te ao Māori, driven by people, place and purpose. Our approach brings together a traditional eye and a contemporary hand to shape meaningful, enduring architectural responses to the needs of our communities.

We believe architecture extends beyond the built form. It is an opportunity to create places, spaces and environments that honour the histories of the whenua, reflect the identities and aspirations of the people they serve, and contribute to a greater purpose for generations to come.

Three pou of Whaiao

Ngā pou e toru

Hoahoanga, Toi and Kōkiri: three pou that hold up one whare.

Pou 1

Hoahoanga

Architecture & masterplanning

Sixteen years of delivering award-winning architecture in Aotearoa.

From marae and papakāinga to civic, education and community buildings, we give form to the aspirations of iwi, hapū, whānau and the communities we work alongside.

Pou 2

Toi

Mahi toi

Our mahi toi practice is shaped through wānanga, dialogue, research and contextual understanding. We explore the stories, histories, identities and aspirations of people and place, distilling these into considered expressions of narrative and form.

Mahi toi is integral to our architectural practice, not an addition to the built form, but part of the thinking that shapes it. This shared approach informs how we interpret, design and create places that reflect the people, places and purposes they serve.

Advocacy

We provide advocacy, facilitation and strategic support to architects, clients, iwi, hapū, marae and communities, helping navigate the relationships and processes that shape meaningful projects. Through wānanga and engagement, we connect project teams with local knowledge holders and artists, ensuring cultural context, community aspirations and place-based knowledge inform project development from the outset.

Over sixteen years, we have seen how the ability to realise a project can be transformative for a community. Our advocacy helps create pathways for community aspirations to become reality, upholding the mana of the whenua, supporting mana motuhake and shaping enduring outcomes for generations to come.
